Fabric Wall

This design/build project called for a moveable partition wall for an entry space in an academic building on the campus of Philadelphia University. Its purpose is to seperate the large entry into a useable studio space while minimizing distractions. My classmate and I won the design competition; presenting us with the task of overseeing the entire project.
The wall is composed of shear fabric stretched over a steel frame. It is meant to react to lighting conditions throughout the day; solid at one point and translucent at another. The interior frame of the wall contains foam panels for an attempt at capturing some of the sound from this busy entry.

Cresheim Valley Trail Head

The program of this project contains a bike shop, artist residences, gallery and coffee shop. It is a wood frame structure whch also uses local materials such as field stone to tie it into its surrounding environment. The horizontal slats of wood which make up the exterior skin were used to continue the topographical lines growth which gently rise from the creek to the base of the structure. The lines hit the base of the building and move vertically encasing the structure. The simple rectangular shapes were used to pay homage to the existing building, a rectangular gaurd house, which is contained within the structure and used as a cafe space.

MSSD Academic Building

The Masters of Science in Sustainable Design (MSSD) is a post graduate program at Philadelphia University. It focuses on designing/engineering structures that work harmoniously with our natural environment.
This building used mainly sunlight to light the building and also help heat spaces using thermal masses. The shape of the building and courtyards came from the rising and falling of the sun. It works as a sun dial in that the sun shines on pieces of the building at different times of day according to their program.
The main hall curves down a terrace which is used as gathering/teaching space. Courtyards are located between the pieces to connect the interior back to the exterior.

Habitat for Humanity

The brief was to design a new headquarters for Habitat for Humanity, Philadelphia. Contained within would be offices, public space, warehouse, and restore elements.
The project was formed around the idea of a modular rythym along existing street front. The centrally located piece of the project is used as a connection of the serveral different parts of the program. It serves as a "hub" of activity which is open to the community and changes functions as needed. The creation of a "hub" was a key piece to the design since their mission is to serve the community and create a better place to live.
